Description
The most influential personality in the history of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley developed his unique style by drawing upon his southern musical roots, which included gospel, Rhythm and Blues, pop and country. With a style and sound that cut across racial and social barriers of the 1950's, he exploded onto the nation's music scene with hit after hit in a meteoric rise to the top of his profession. He quickly became an idol to millions of teenagers and, to many adults, a threat to the social fabric of the country. Known throughout the world, even today, by his first name, Elvis has become a legend and, to millions of loyal worshippers, a deity figure whose persona magnetism and allure will never die.
Elvis starred in 33 successful films, most of which were convenient vehicles to showcase his singing. He made history with his record-breaking television appearances and live concert performances in Las Vegas. He sold more than one billion records throughout the world (more than any other singer in history), and his tapes, movies and CD's are still in great demand. From a sales stand point, 140 of his singles and albums attained gold, platinum or multi-platinum status, far more than any other artist in history. Elvis won three Grammy Awards and was nominated for eleven others by the National Academy of Recording Artists and Sciences. He also won the Grammy of a Lifetime Achievement Award, at age 36. Other awards included being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. On August 16, 1977, he was found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his Memphis home, Graceland, leaving behind a legacy of success and legions of adoring fans who still commemorate and celebrate his life and his death.
From the earliest days of his stardom Elvis was known for his good looks, humility, charisma, sensuality, kindness and generosity. He is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of twentieth century pop culture.
Pointillism artist Michael Coupe depicts a relatively young Elvis, deep in contemplative thought. Notice the penetrating eyes and the slightly curled lip that have become trademarks throughout his tumultuous career. Despite his fame and fortune, Elvis always had a dark side that Coupe has masterfully captured in this hauntingly accurate portrayal of "The King of Rock and Roll".
